There are numerous spells across Skyrim, many of them powerful and can be deadly if used correctly. In this page we are going to cover some of the spells of Skyrim.
Let us start with the categories. There are the categories of spells in Skyrim. They are: Destruction, Illusion, Restoration, Alteration
Let us start with some of the basic spells.
Flames are one of the basic spells of Skyrim. You immediately retrieve the spell in the very beginning of the game. It is useful as you try to escape the prison, but later, as you level up higher and higher, you will probably forget about the spell.
It has a good rating of damage, but only at the start of the game, such as in level 1-5.

Sparks, unlike flames, was not added immediately into the player. The fastest way to find it is when you try to escape Helgen, when you are in the torture room, you will be ordered to open a cage with the mage inside. Inside that specific cage lies the spell book of the spell Sparks.
The spell Flames deals more damage to your opponent, but the spell Sparks (and other Lightning spells) decrease your opponents' Health and Magicka. That is the bonus of the Lightning spells.

Frostbite is one of the basic spells, but it requires you to explore Skyrim or (to make it much easier) buy the spell book, if you have enough money to buy it. Frostbite is in the category of Ice spells, and Ice spells damage both Health and Stamina.
Because it damages Stamina, that means that the spell can slow your enemies down. Use Frostbite when you have an enemy that has powerful power attacks, so they can't manage to make power attacks.

Those are the basic spells of Skyrim. Now we will go to more complicated spells.
Firebolt, as can be seen from the name, is in the category of Fire spells. Unlike the spell Flames, which was continously spraying fire, you must hold the flame in your hand to create enough power to release a bolt of fire that is more powerful than the spell of Flames.
Like other Fire spells, it deals more damage to opponents, and it takes a while to create the bolt of fire, unlike Flames, which can instantly spray fire.

Lightning Bolt, is one of the Lightning spells, and it deals damage to both Health and Magicka. Like Firebolot, you must hold the lightning on your hand to create and throw the bolt.
For me, I prefer using the Lightning Bolt on magicians. Magicians and mages rely on Magicka to shoot spells, and if you use Lightning spells on them, they will be running out of Magicka and are forced to use (usually) daggers.
